I wasn't impressed with any of the follow up singles to Close To Fantasy, except Lullaby For You, which had a beautiful piano arrangment. I found the ballads dry, the attempted Possession revival dance-pop tracks flat and not nearly as inspired; and the rest just inoffensive and ineffective lite-pop fluff. I avoided the album for a long while, and when I finally decided to get it and listen to it, it was full of the drivelling love songs I expected from an album entitled 'Love Forever'.
On her first album I mostly tried to avoid her ballads (probably more because I wanted her to be the artist Possession led me to believe she was going to be, than because they were actually weak or bad or boring), as I found her uptempo numbers were far better. On this album however, Jyongri strikes a wonderful balance with beautiful pop-ballads, sweet mid-tempo songs with great hooks, and a couple upbeat danceable numbers. At first listen I thought this album was weak and bland, but after giving it some real attention I've realized it's actually pretty good.
The ballads and love songs all feel more mature, with strong melodies and good production. Jyongri chose to switch it up in the arrangment and production areas for a few tracks, and it really worked. Songs like 'The Chills' and 'Stars' have a completely different feel for Jyongri. This new side is a little darker feeling, but doesn't mask or eliminate her essence from the songs. It's a very interesting mix, and I'd like to see her explore more possibilities there.
While there are certainly some kinks that Jyongri needs to work out (brushing up and polishing her vocals, testing out some types of songs other than dance-pop or ballad, and finding some new subject matter), she's turning into a surprising mild-interest artist for me. This is only her second album and she's already made improvements to her initial attempt. I still believe she has vast potential, she just needs to step out of her comfort zone and try some new things.
